EVENT DESCRIPTION
Spend a day absorbed in the ancient craft of basketmaking in the beautiful surroundings of Killruddery Garden. Guided by Basketmaker Sarah Jenkinson you will learn the craft of basketmaking while weaving a beautiful Willow & Hazel Handled Asymmetric Basket. A beautiful strong hand basket that is inward-sloping originally woven to protect its contents while bringing produce to market and this is what makes it the perfect basket for foraging and daily use today. This workshop introduces you to the ancient craft of basketmaking where you will be shown a variety of traditional weaves using Irish homegrown willow.
Willow is a beautiful natural sustainable material that is a joy to weave with, creating handwoven baskets that are eco friendly, biodegradable, durable, lightweight and a beautiful alternative to plastic.
The day will also include refreshments on arrival and a Long table lunch in the Killruddery's award winning Grain Store restaurant, traditional skills, immersive experience in the Garden of Ireland
ABOUT SARAH JENKINSON
Sarah Jenkinson lives and works in Galway city as a full time basketmaker. Sarah made her first willow basket a few years ago and instantly fell in love with the uniquely spiced aroma and texture of willow, and the ancient craft of basketmaking. Having been given the opportunity to work as an apprentice with Ciaran Hogan at his workshop and shop at the Spiddal Craft Centre, it was here that Sarah developed her skills and love for traditional Irish basketmaking along with attending basketmaking residencies all over Europe where she learned new basketry skills from many talented basketmakers.
Sarah loves weaving with willow and she has found that the ancient craft of basketmaking has rooted her in a very special place, deeply connected to the earth. Sarah weaves baskets with barked willow allowing the stunning natural colours and the uniquely spiced aroma of the willow varieties to shine through on each basket. Sarah also grows various willow varieties in a small Salley Garden in Connemara from which she harvests willow every winter for use in her baskets.

Killruddery Flowers are grown here with the seasons, letting the soil, sun and sky guide what blooms in the south-facing border of our Walled Garden. We pick them fresh in the early mornings or late evenings and create arrangements in our dedicated Flower Studio in Killruddery Yard.
From fine anemones to armfuls of colourful dahlias, feathery Nigella and the tall stems topped with creamy-white bell flowers of regal Solomon's Seal, Killruddery Flowers designs chemical-free arrangements for all our special occasions

- All materials are supplied
- Please wear warm thick soled shoes, and dress to suit the days weather
- Please allow yourself plenty of time to get here, park in our main Car Park and follow signs to Killruddery Flower Studio
