    GARDENER’S TALK w/ June Blake

Discovering The Home Place: Making Sense with Plants, Buildings and Landscape

The hallmark of June Blake’s award-winning garden is the gentle juxtaposition of old and new. Seeking answers from the history of her own property and the wider landscape, her work is as much about reinstating the integrity of the past as it is about planting anew. June’s own garden in Wicklow has rigorously connected her ‘plot’ to the surrounding landscape; the flow of past to present and an awareness of the environment and its seasons is ever-present. This session looks at June’s experience evolving her garden over a decade, with focus on her careful selection of plants and how she has managed to interconnect plants, buildings and landscape to remain true to the spirit of the place.

    Joseph Young: Sonic Baton Performance

Join us for a multi-sensory experience as our Artist-in-Residence looks to change our perception of art with his first public response to Killruddery’s historic soundscape using a custom-designed Sonic Baton performance instrument. An artist working in sound, performance and installation, Joseph Young will connect his baton to a computer to conduct recorded sounds of the environment. Captured over the past year, the sounds around the Estate and in the House with the Brabazon family will fuse into a unique sonic portrait of day-to-day contemporary Killruddery.

Tactile learning and touch is essential for a child’s growth in physical abilities, cognitive and language skills, and even social and emotional development. Touch is not only imperative for short-term advancement with infancy and early childhood sensory experiences, but for long-term development within the child. Long-term effects of touch vary from educational results to social and emotional growth.

This is a creative space to get messy with your little ones (without having to worry about cleaning up afterwards!) Our workshops encourage development and growth through tactile and sensory learning. Together, we explore textures and shapes through the mixed media including paint and clay. Weekly drop-in workshops facilitated by experienced art teachers in a safe and relaxed environment.

Whilst there, parents can avail of what’s on offer at the newly refurblished Grain Store Café serving the best of Killruddery’s seasonal produce, coffee and refreshments for both parents and toddlers, as well as the wonderful Farm Shop and free parking on site.

A Special Easter event for children to eggsplore the beautiful grounds of Killruddery in collaboration with our children’s arts and crafts partners Me and the Moon, some new born chicks and some baby lambs.

Me and the Moon have designed a special map to guide you on a garden route to find some magical moments to sketch and treasure, pass each challenge, which will include making a flower to add to a collective Spring Garden collage, some old fashion easter themed games, make a botanical Easter decoration to take home, and when all items are checked off, take home a keepsake from Killruddery and (because we know you may have gathered enough sugar), just a few tiny chocolate eggs.

Killruddery hosts a weekly series of ‘homegrown’ dining experiences. Head Chef Rafal Lorys prepares a decadent 3-course menu, showcasing Killruddery’s own seasonal, sun-kissed ingredients from our Walled Garden & Farm. With occasional pop-up guest chefs!

On the 3oth April we welcome Rootsdinners

Roots is a roaming food project established by partners Keith Coleman and Aisling Mc Hugh. After hosting a series of dinners in Fia, a café they co-managed a the time, the seed of what would eventually become Roots had been sown. Inspired by the wealth of produce this island has to offer, and the simple act of gathering people around the table to share a meal, Roots has grown into a unique dining experience. To date, the duo have hosted dinners in an array of interesting space; from The Fumbally Stables, to Hang Tough Gallery, and even in a Lawn Bowls Club. Roots has now found a home in Rossnaree House, in the heart of the Boyne Valley. The couple’s dream is to one day operate a small guesthouse with adjoining dining room and space to grow the food they serve.

Roots doesn’t start with a menu.

It starts with exploration. Seasonal insight. Foraging. Sometimes a dinner idea emerges from a conversation with friends. Sometimes with a local producer or a passionate chef. From this, we uncover stories that we develop into pop-up dinners. For us, Roots is as much about our journey as it is about the dinners we create. It’s a celebration of culture, heritage and native produce. It culminates into an experience that fulfils our everlasting curiosity to understand food, and what it means to share it in beautiful places with wonderful people.

Founder of the Special Plants Nursery in southwest England and the Rare Plants Fairs, avid gardener and author Derry Watkins has been collecting seeds and plants across the world for over thirty years. The Special Plants Nursery sells unusual plants including an amazing range of hardy herbaceous and rockery plants as well as many tender perennials for terrace and conservatory. In 1996 Derry converted a derelict barn into her own home and the surrounding fields into a remarkable garden overlooking the Bath countryside, that has since featured in a wide range of gardening publications including Garden Design Journal and Garden Illustrated. Described as ‘compact and overflowing’ her own nursery spills into her garden that is landscaped downhill. Derry has authored two books on greenhouse gardening and has introduced many new plants to the Special Plants Nursery from her numerous trips to far flung countries including Kyrgystan, China and South Africa. She teaches one day practical gardening courses at the nursery and at The English Gardening School and lectures extensively.

Silent Soundwalk with artist-in-residence, Joseph Young

(Followed by an informal discussion and listening session)

Listening is at the heart of Artist-in-residence Joseph Young’s practice. Often, we deliberately cut ourselves off from the sounds of the environment around us, either with our ubiquitous smartphones or by losing ourselves in our own thoughts. A silent soundwalk allows to open our ears to the soundscape around us, to notice those everyday sounds that we often block out or ignore and to experience the world in a surprising and new way.

A Habit of Usefulness: Lady Meath’s Philanthropic Career

Independent scholar and local historian Rosemary Raughter returns to Killruddery to delve into the causes and initiatives with which Lady Meath’s name is associated. These include the Ministering Children’s League, which aimed to instil ‘a habit of usefulness’ in the young; the Girls’ Friendly Society, whose first Irish meeting took place in Bray in 1877; and the Brabazon Employment Scheme, designed to provide ‘interesting occupation for those…forced to pass the weary hours idly’ in workshouses and similar institutions. Rosemary specialises in women’s history and her publications include Religious Women And Their History: Breaking The Silence (2005) and The Journal of Elizabeth Bennis, 1749 – 1779 (2007). She has also authored numerous articles on the role of women in philanthropy, religion, domestic life, and political activism in both academic and local history journals. Rosemary is currently chairperson of Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society.

“A space to connect and feel understood in conversation with the dancers. A calm in the storm.”
    -Laura Valentine

We are delighted to welcome Numinous Flux to Killruddery, a collective of contemporary artists based in Nashville, TN. Established in 2014 by Artistic Director and Choreographer, Laura Valentine, Numinous connects the human experience through expressive movement in performance and open community workshops and is dedicated to the exploration, education and expression of the art of contemporary dance. The group brings new show Breathe to Irish audiences, revealing the complexity of the struggle of mental health. The show aims to create a space to “hold your breath” in the midst of chaos, raising questions around the swift isolation that anxiety and depression brings, albeit such a widespread and shared human experience.

    Seasonal Halloween Fun!

Pick and carve a pumpkin from our patch in our annual fun day celebrating Ireland’s most ancient festival.

We are delighted to host a pick and carve pumpkin extravaganza this year for all ages to participate in an outdoor celebration of this ancient festival – a potion of pagan and Christian meanings, lore and legend! The earliest form was an end-of-summer festival, ‘Samhain’, often known as the Celtic New Year, to mark the beginning of the long winter nights. This weekend at Killruddery, we want to celebrate the light days of summer and dark nights of winter with our activity partners including Me And The Moon & The Cool Food School and host some fantastic seasonal workshops. Don’t miss our very special DIY Scarecrow Competition and the chance to unite with your family and get creative outside!
